Gastropod

Gastropods are the most diverse and abundant type of mollusks with 15,000 fossil species identified.  There are nearly 35,000 living species including snails, slugs, conchs, whelks, and limpets. The shells of different gastropods vary enormously. Most gastropod shells are coiled and this coiling may be in one plane or in a spire shape.  The outer surface of the shells may be ornamented with ridges, grooves, bumps, spines, or other markings.
