Grasshoppers have six jointed legs that are incredibly powerful and are able to jump extraordinary distances. A 1-inch grasshopper can leap 20 inches. Despite their large size, grasshoppers are herbivores and have a diet that consists solely of plant matter. Grasshoppers eat grasses, weeds, leaves, shrubs, bark and numerous other species of plants that surround them. In certain countries, grasshoppers are eaten by people as a good source of protein.
