Fiddler crabs are small, semi-terrestrial crabs of genus Uca. Like all crabs, they shed their shells as they grow. Newly molted crabs have soft shells and are vulnerable to predators. If crabs have lost legs or claws, a new one will appear when they molt. Male fiddler crabs are recognized by their asymmetric claws.
The fiddler crab gets its name from the movement of the small claw when feeding that resembles moving a bow across a fiddle.
